We are just weekend birdwatchers and extremely interested in seabirds, especially about identifying them. We have been going to observe seabirds not only in Japan but also overseas. Russia 2011, Singapore 2013, Australia 2015,2016, New Zealand 2017,2019, Hawaii 2018, Tahiti 2018, Antarctic 2019 etc…
This website contains as many photos as we have taken. We also plan to organize our knowledge of identification points of seabirds. We hope this website will help you with your seabirdwatching.
If you have any questions about seabirdwatching in Japan, please feel free to contact us at any time.

Hiroyuki TANOI

From Tokyo, now live in Miyagi, Japan.
I started birdwatching when I was 6 years old and have been doing it for around 30 years.
When I was a junior high school student, I observed seabirds from the ferry (Tokyo-Kushiro). I felt it was difficult and interesting to identify seabirds at that time, and I became fascinated with them.
I work for an environmental research company. In my work, I mainly observe land birds.

Shoko TANOI

From Tochigi, now live in Miyagi, Japan.
I’ve communed with birdwatching since I was 10 years old, but I wasn’t very keen on it.
Hiroyuki taught me the magic of seabirds. I’m still learning about seabirds. I am interested in identifying species based on the flight behavior of seabirds, so I have taken videos of seabirds and posted them on youtube.
My hobby was rock climbing when I was in college and now I’m into trekking.
I work for the same company that Hiroyuki works for.
